Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction values the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure last September.

Wolff, who holds a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team principal and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold a third of the company.

An official representative said: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The governance of Mercedes F1 will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Increase

The deal signifies a substantial rise in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos Group bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in valuations of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed more than $630 million (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

It is Pitt's most successful movie and the highest-earning sports movie to date.

Current Performance

Mercedes are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix left this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
