The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.
Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
