Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
